Across the entire organization, the International Bureau for Children’s Rights (IBCR) carries out its work using six complementary approaches:

Our organization places its action within the framework of the universality of children’s rights

Our organization places its action within the framework of the universality of children’s rights :

  • In accordance with the commitments of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, its Optional Protocols and General Comments, as well as other international, regional or national legal instruments respecting its spirit ;
  • We work in Canada (our head office) and internationally, everywhere with the same mission, the same results, the same actions and the same approaches ;
  • We are one of many stakeholders in the field of children’s rights, making a specific contribution as part of a whole ;
  • We place the sharing of experiences and practices at the heart of our work, and are careful to keep a critical eye on our actions and approaches ;
  • We ensure that our actions and initiatives take into account the realities of the contexts in which we operate, requiring adaptability, flexibility and creativity.

Our organization focuses its expertise on children’s rights

Making children’s rights a reality in everyday life requires concrete changes and the ability to translate legal texts into actions and decisions: a new place for each stakeholder, more appropriate policies and new practices, funding, collaboration, empowerment of the child, etc.

This involves technical work and requires a range of complementary expertise which the International Bureau for Children’s Rights (IBCR) has at its disposal :

  • Children’s rights: legal expertise, child-friendly justice, child participation, child protection and safeguarding ;
  • In methodologies: adult training, co-creation and support for the implementation and scaling-up of experimental initiatives ;
  • In advocacy and research.

Our organization takes a systemic approach to its work

We aim for global action linked to concrete, pre-defined results. We do this by adopting a systemic approach, working with and aiming to strengthen the complementary skills of :

  • Children, especially those who face the greatest obstacles to having their rights respected ;
  • Governmental and institutional stakeholders ;
  • Child protection and justice professionals ;
  • Children’s rights organizations and community networks ;
  • Actors from the formal and informal private sectors with a role to play in promoting children’s rights ;
  • Academic institutions ;
  • The medias ;
  • And any other actor committed to children’s rights.

Our organization takes a partnership approach to its work, based on reciprocity

Our work complements and builds on what already exists, in a spirit of mutual collaboration. This translates into the enhancement of our field of expertise through the development of partnerships around the world, which contribute to the fulfillment of our mission.

Our organization aims for continuous improvement in its practices

Our organization strives to be a learning organization, where information gathered and lessons learned are systematically integrated into strategic planning and execution, creating a cycle of continuous improvement, relevance and results. Through monitoring, evaluation and learning, our organization is part of an iterative process that optimizes resources, improves the effectiveness of interventions and enhances the overall impact of our action.

Our organization implements appropriate governance

Our governance is based on accountability, ensuring transparency and accountability to our partners and donors. Our accountability is based on our strategic plans and our institutional framework, which is itself flexible enough to evolve easily.

Our governance is also based on the establishment of a diversified, multi-disciplinary team, representative of our working contexts and as complementary as possible; on results-based management; on regular forums for exchange and joint strategic reflection; and on forums for sharing information and experience on our actions, projects and results achieved.
