Prevention of trafficking and protection of child victims in the Republic of Congo: Policemen and social workers training In the summer of 2010, the International Bureau for Children’s Rights received funding from the U.S Department of State to implement a project entitled « Prevention of trafficking and protection of child victims in the Republic of Congo : Policemen and social workers training. » This project allowed the IBCR to expand its activities in Africa and to demonstrate its expertise in the fight against human trafficking.
In fact, while studies reveal that internal and transnational trafficking exists in the Republic of Congo, the data about the trafficking phenomenon and children’s rights is limited. The general objectives of the program are:
The project will last two years (October 2010 – October 2012) and is financially supported by UNICEF. The main beneficiaries of the project are the National Superior School of Police and the National Gendarmerie School. This fall, trainings will be held in these establishments, destined at future police forces teachers, and will continue until the spring of 2012. To achieve these objectives, the IBCR also collaborated with government professionals (Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Social Affairs) and NGOs, consulting them at each stage of the project, collecting their comments and thus benefiting from their contributions.
- To address the lack of knowledge about the phenomenon of trafficking in Congo;
- To train key professionals: policemen, gendarmes and social workers to better prevent, protect and assist child victims of trafficking;
- To produce detailed reports on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other existing resources in Congo in order to train policemen in the region.
