Children in armed conflicts

Who are the children exposed to armed conflicts ?

The term « children exposed to armed conflicts » refers to people under 18 years of age who suffer from the direct and indirect consequences of war. Direct consequences of war include illegal recruitment, sexual violence, mutilations, murder, family separation, child trafficking, illegal detention or disabilities caused by war.

Indirect consequences or war include reduced access to basic services, increased poverty, malnutrition, diseases and stigmatization from families and communities (for example, when children associated with armed forces or armed groups return to their families, girls sometimes with children as a result of rape).

The effects of armed conflicts on children can be significant and generate long term repercussions on their physical, emotional and mental health.
