Personnel Training on Children’s Rights Protection at Global Affairs Canada

Course session – Global Affairs Canada

Project duration : 2011 to today

In March 2010, the Canadian International Development Agency (now amalgamated with Global Affairs Canada) launched a Canada-wide request for proposals to identify an organisation or a consortium that could develop courses on children’s rights and teach them to the Department’s officials. Following the selection process in February 2011, the IBCR was awarded the mandate as a privileged partner of the government. Initiated in 2012, the effective collaboration between the two entities continues to this day.

Our goals :

The purpose of this project is to offer officials in the different sectors of the Department—from development employees to members of the economic, political and consular sections—a course on children’s rights entirely adapted to the demands of their respective mandates. The training aims to build their capacities and better integrate children’s rights into their analyses and everyday work.

As a first step, the IBCR collaborated with the Department to design a training toolkit containing educational tools—case studies, quizzes, case scenarios and short stories for children illustrating certain rights—and data sheets.

During the winter of 2014, the IBCR co-facilitated the first such courses in French and English using the newly developed material. Since then, four fictitious development projects have been created to allow participants to work on concrete project proposals that best illustrate the diverse challenges of integrating child rights into heterogeneous development projects.
